"At that time, I was in a depression. That is exactly why the quiet of those streets reached me the way it did."
In 2019 Katsumi Nisizawa @katsumi.n5394 travelled across Russia alone. He photographed the strangers who stopped for him, the mother and child who shared his compartment on the Trans-Siberian, the country moving past the window, the long empty hours between stations.
Sometimes he talked to the people he photographed, and when someone invited him home, he went. Sometimes he said nothing at all and just raised the camera. Either way he treated the encounter as something worth keeping.
He isn't trying to show you Russia. He's showing you what he could still notice.
"I'm not in that state anymore. If I went back to Russia now, I couldn't take these pictures again."
Silent Land is his first book. Self-published, first edition of 60 signed copies. A reprint has not been decided.
Why Should You Buy This Book?
- Hold a book made entirely from darkroom prints - Every image in this book began as a print made by Katsumi's own hands. Not a digital file. Not a film scan. He printed the whole book in the darkroom first, and the book was reproduced from those prints — the grain, the burn, the weight of his decisions carried through to the page. What you pay for here is the darkroom work, not the paper.
- See what a state of mind does to a photograph - Katsumi says he could not make these pictures today, because he is no longer the person who made them. That's the rare thing about this book: it shows you how much of a photograph comes from the condition of the person holding the camera. Take it with you the next time you travel, and it will change what you stop for.
- Own a self-published first book in its first edition - Katsumi Nisizawa paid for this book himself. 60 copies, signed, no reprint decided. A book made this way doesn't get a second printing by default. It gets one only if the first one sells.
This is not a book about Russia. It's a record of what a quiet mind could still reach for, and what strangers gave back.
